“Look at his BIG EYES!” A chance discovery of this fascinating caterpillar on the fence post sparked excited discussion among the 3’s and 4’s at The Meadow.
“Why does he have such big eyes?”
“Look! He’s smiling!”
Further examination by the children made them realize that he was “pretending” and playing “dress up” and that those were not his REAL eyes. Andrew was able to get some good photographs and after printing them, they used them for further research.
The children located this striking and easily identifiable caterpillar in the field guide. Spicebush Swallowtail. The excitement over this pretender created a new level of observation and suddenly caterpillars and butterflies were seen everywhere and became the focus of much study and play.
